Military Memorabilia THE TRANSVAAL MARCH . BONHEUR Theo. London Paxton & Co 1899.
Features the portrait of General Sir Refders Buller.
Commemorating a campaign of the Boer War, this music was published before Sir Redfers Buller's fall from grace.
Born in Devon, General Sir Redvers Buller won the Victoria Cross while Lieutenant Colonel in command of the Frontier Light Horse at Holbane Mountain during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879.
However, Buller was a controversial leader. He was popular with his troops but, but his officers disliked him because he was arrogant and refused to modernize his battle strategy. Buller ranged his troops in close formation and the ill-protected British regiments were repeatedly repulsed by the Boers, resulting in many bloody casualties. They were no match for The Boers who fought with superior mauser rifles with magazines and long-range artillery. The commander of the Boer forces, General Botha, devised ingenious defensive systems that enabled them to hold the Tugela line for months. In January of 1900, General Buller was superceded as Commander in Chief of British forces by Lord Roberts. He returned to Britain where there was much criticism over his style of command and he was relieved of his rank in the British army.
